Federal Hill Park and South Harbor Renaissance.

Over the past eight years, South Harbor Renaissance (SHR) has worked collaboratively with the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks, the Commission on Historical and Architectural Preservation, the Baltimore Tree Trust, the Downtown Baltimore Family Alliance, the Federal Hill Neighborhood Association, the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore, and the South Baltimore Gateway Partnership to restore, preserve and enhance Federal Hill Park as a resource for the diverse communities of Baltimore City and its visitors.

 

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Over $800,000 of improvements to Federal Hill Park including:

  • Installation of a new Flag Staff Plaza, dedicated by Former Governor Martin O’Malley in June 2012

  • Restoration of two major historic monuments to War of 1812 heroes General Samuel Smith and Colonel George Armistead, rededicated in September 2013

  • Completion of plans, designs and construction for a new historic-themed playground, reflecting the State’s civic, maritime, and mercantile heritage, completed in June 2014

  • Installation of historically appropriate, 3-arm, weatherproof benches, as well as designated recycling and trash receptacles

  • Restoration and painting of the playground area fence enclosure and light poles

  • Installation of dog waste dispensers

  • Engagement of the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore to provide consistent cleaning and landscaping, beginning in May 2015

  • Planting of 27 new trees in June 2015

  • Restoration of turf over a multi-year period beginning in fall 2015

  • Rebranding in February 2018

  • Public launch of “Campaign for the Train” in September 2018

  • Installation of historically appropriate B&O themed Toddler Train piece to the playground in May 2019

  • Nigel is active in the local Jewish community and has volunteered with a variety of educational, faith-based, and environmental justice nonprofits over the years.

  • He often visits Federal Hill Park several times a day whether exercising, spending time with his family on the playground, or walking with his dog along the pathways. He is committed to preserving and enhancing Federal Hill Park as an outstanding historic and recreational resource for all Baltimore’s residents and visitors.

Laura Collins, Board Secretary

  • Active duty Coast Guard Officer who has lived in Federal Hill since 2020 with husband Brian Glander and son Karl.

  • In Baltimore, she is active with her church and volunteers with several Baltimore non profits. She also completed her 200-hour teacher training in Baltimore in the spring of 2023 and teaches locally. She is passionate about building community through engagement, understanding, and beautification.

  • Federal Hill Park is the center of community life here in our neighborhood, a regional attraction, and a center of enjoyment and appreciation for Charm City visitors. Laura wants to make sure the Park and immediate surroundings are a safe, beautiful, inclusive, welcoming destination for locals and visitors alike..... for now and for years to come!
